Tuition Waivers
The purpose of issuing tuition waivers for cooperating teachers is to provide those licensed professional educators who host SIU student teachers an opportunity to update their skills by enrolling in graduate classes. This opportunity for continued professional development benefits our future teacher candidates. Tuition waivers are also distributed to administrators who host SIU student teachers, to assist principals and superintendents as they work to promote continued professional development in the schools and districts they serve. Our policy allows school and district administrators to transfer unexpired, unused waivers to other licensed professional educators within their own district who are currently employed as either teachers of record or as principals or superintendents.
Tuition Waiver Policies
Waivers may be:
-
- Used for up to 6 credit hours of on-campus, off-campus, and online graduate-level classes at SIU (tuition and fees) or SIUE (tuition only). Late fees and textbook fees are not payable with this waiver and are the responsibility of the student.
- Used for lower-level coursework if recipient is admitted to SIU as a non-declared graduate student.
- Must be used within the three-semester time limit.
- Used by licensed professional educators currently employed as classroom teachers of record, principals, or superintendents in the same school district as the original recipient to which the waiver was issued.
- Transferred to anyone currently employed as a licensed teacher of record under contract in the same school district as the original recipient with an administrator's signature.
- Used for any semester other than those specified on the waiver.
- Split between semesters or used for more than one semester.
- Used for undergraduate credit.
- Used to pay past bursar’s bills.
- Used to pay late fees.
- Used to pay textbook fees. Opt out here.
- Used to pay graduation fees.
- Transferred to anyone not currently employed as a licensed teacher of record under contract in the same school district as the original recipient.
- Sold or used as compensation by the district.
Receiving a Tuition Waiver
Tuition waivers are distributed directly to recipients’ email accounts as PDF attachments no later than October 15 (fall) or March 15 (spring).
Using a Tuition Waiver
- Read the waiver, policy, and procedure. Direct questions to tep@siu.edu or 618-453-2354.
- Apply to the SIU Graduate School to take graduate-level classes or apply to SIU Graduate School as a non-declared graduate student to take lower-level coursework.
- Fill out Section II of the tuition waiver and sign it.
- Sign Section V of the waiver. If this is a transferred waiver, the administrator needs to have signed in Section III.
- Register for all coursework toward which you intend the waiver to be applied.
- Submit waiver via email to: tep@siu.edu or in person to Wham 110.
Once TEP processes the waiver, it is directly applied to the student's SIU account no earlier than 10 days prior to the beginning of the first day of class.
SIUC requires all students who are taking on-campus courses to have health insurance. To meet this mandate, all students taking on-campus courses will be billed the student health insurance fee. Students who already have health insurance coverage may apply to waive the fee by completing the waiver process prior to the posted deadlines. Step-by-step instructions for completing the waiver application can be found on this webpage: https://shc.siu.edu/health-insurance/. All students taking on-campus courses who do not complete the waiver process by the posted deadline will be automatically enrolled in the SIU Student Health Insurance Plan and will not be eligible for a refund.
Students who are registered for ONLY web based-distance education courses are not eligible for the Student Health Insurance Plan and are not charged the insurance fee.
