Professional Educator LicenseHow to earn a Professional Educator License (PEL)

  1. Apply to SIU.
  2. Meet with the academic advisor for your program.
    Your advisor will help you plan your course of study and let you know when you are ready to begin four consecutive semesters in the TEP. Your advisor will also monitor your progress throughout the program to make sure you are staying on track and meeting requirements.
  3. Apply to the TEP.
  4. Create an account on ELIS (Educator Licensure Information System).
  5. Complete all program and degree requirements. You will then be eligible for a PEL.

After you are admitted:

During your 1st semester in the TEP:

  • Begin clinical experiences in public schools.
  • Complete mandatory Teacher Safety Education Module.

During your 2nd semester in TEP:

  • Continue clinical experiences in public schools.

During your 3rd semester in the TEP:

  • Continue clinical experiences in public schools.
  • Pass the content area test(s) for your licensure area - www.il.nesinc.com.
  • Submit required information for Student Teaching- Mandated Reporter training, physical exam, and TB test.
  • Pass Gateway Defense.

During your 4th semester in the TEP:

  • Full-time student teaching experience in a public school.

Once you complete all program requirements:

  • Your SIU degree will be awarded (time frame is 1-5 weeks).
  • The Office of Teacher Education will notify the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) that you have completed all program and state requirements. (This is called "entitlement".)
  • After you become entitled, you must log into your ELIS account to register and claim your license. You will not be eligible for employment until this is complete!
