Lower-Level Candidates (EDUC 301, 302, 303): Candidates enrolled in EDUC 301, 302, or 303 may be hired as substitute teachers in any classroom and in any school except on their designated clinical day. Clinical days are reserved for observation and participation in clinical experiences and may not be used as substitute teaching under any circumstances.
Student Teachers and EDUC 400 Candidates: Student Teachers and special education majors enrolled in EDUC 400 may be hired as substitute teachers only in their assigned classroom. They are not permitted to substitute in any other classroom, grade level, or building. Any days served as a substitute teacher in accordance with this policy will count toward the required student teaching or clinical hours (EDUC 400). Student teachers and special education majors enrolled in EDUC 400 are allowed 5 instructional days of substitute service in the classroom of their placement. Any additional days of service will need to be approved by the Teacher Education Program.
Local School Policies: Please note that individual schools or districts may have their own substitute teaching policies and procedures that are more restrictive than ours. In such cases, the school or district policy must be followed. However, if their policy allows for greater flexibility, our university policy will take precedence and must be followed as outlined above.
